How to Reduce Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is quickly becoming the number one reason for car accidents in the United States. Regardless of the distraction, whether it’s your cell phone or a coffee spill, it’s important to ignore it and keep your eyes and mind on the road. Because April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Pfeiffer Plainfield Used Cars has gathered a few tips on how to reduce distracted driving to help you stay safe all year round!

Keep off your cell phone. Cell phones are quickly becoming the number one distraction while driving. Whether it’s a text message from your friend, an email from your boss, or a call from a loved one, it’s important to remember that it can wait! Also, the average time your eyes are off the road to read a text message is five seconds—this is enough time to travel the length of a football field when you are moving at 55 mph. Imagine all of the accidents that can happen at that time when you’re busy texting!

Don’t eat and drink while driving. It’s always tempting to dive headfirst into your fast food bag, the moment you get it from the drive thru, but don’t do it! Wait until you are fully stopped before enjoying your delicious treat. Fumbling with wrappers, sipping soda, and possible food spills are small distractions that can cause big accidents.

Get ready for work at home. If you find yourself running late to work—or a social event—don’t try and do your makeup or shave in the car. Like the other distractions mentioned before, these ones cause you to take your eyes off the road constantly. It’s better to be a few extra minutes late to work than to find yourself in a traffic collision because you were too focused on your five o’clock shadow.
